Herbs - List of Herbs with Definitions and how they are used.
Panax
Ginseng has been used in Chinese medicine for more than 5000 years and
is one of the most prized and expensive Chinese herbs. It is used to reduce
stress, increase energy and motivation, strengthen the immune system and
decrease fatigue. Studies have shown that Panax ginseng enhances physical
performance in athletes, while the Soviet scientist, Dr Brekham, identified it
as a superior adaptogen, normalizing body functions, reducing stress and
preventing disease. Further studies in Japan and India have demonstrated that
rats fed with Panax ginseng were able to learn tasks quicker, perform at a
faster rate and make fewer mistakes than those in the control group. Panax
ginseng should not be confused with either Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus
senticosis) or American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius).

Pau d'arco
bark (Tabebuia impetiginosa)
contains the active constituents Lapachol and beta-lapachone, which are also
known as naphthaquinones. Laboratory tests have demonstrated that both Lapachol
and beta-lapachone have anti-fungal properties as potent as ketoconazole,
a common antifungal drug, used in the treatment of Candidiasis and yeast
infections. Pau D'arco is not soluble in water and is best taken in tincture
form where the active ingredients have been extracted medicinally in
pharmaceutical ethanol. To prevent side effects, it is also important that the
whole bark is used in the extraction process. This process has been followed at
Native Remedies to bring you the strongest and most effective formula
possible.

Paulina
cupana (guarana) is a nervine tonic and stimulant which boosts energy
levels.
Guarana has been used as an appetite suppressant, smoking cessation aid, as a
stimulant, for pain relief, and commercially as a flavoring in soft drinks. The
first record of the use of Guarana dates all the way back to 1669! It was this
year that a Jesuit missionary named J. Felipe Betendorf visited an area deep in
the Amazon Basin where the Mau Indians were found using it as a daily
tonic/stimulant. These Indians and the white settlers who lived with them lauded
the beverage for its ability to ward off headaches, relieve cramps and fevers,
and as an aphrodisiac. Maybe most responsible for its popularity was the belief
by these people that their daily usage helped to prevent malaria and dysentery.
It is still consumed today for all of these reasons.
