Preventing Bladder Infections

Bladder infections occur when bacteria get into the bladder. There are several ways this bacteria can be introduced into the body.

The way some women wipe after going to the bathroom can cause them to get a bladder infection. Bladder infections can also be caused by a blockage of urine flow, which may occur in pregnant women or men with an enlarged prostate.

Here are some tips on preventing bladder infection.

If you're a man:

Always urinate after you have sex.
Always wash your penis whenever you bathe or shower.
Try to urinate often during the day (drink plenty of water)

If you're a woman:

Keep the area around your vagina clean.
Always urinate after you have sex.
Try to urinate often during the day (drink plenty of water)
Wipe from front to back after you go to the bathroom.
Wash the vagina area whenever you bathe or shower.
Wear cotton underwear.
Use pantyhose with cotton crotches.
Avoid tight clothing. Wear loose pants.
Don't wear a wet bathing suit for a long time.
